Is tap water in Egypt safe for drinking?

The biggest concern, besides street safety, is the health issues some people might be experiencing while visiting Egypt. There is absolutely nothing to be worried about, as long as you choose what to eat and drink wisely and most importantly where. Some of the reasons, why people get sick, might be all inclusive open buffet in a hotel or going way "too local" way too soon.

Most hotels in Egypt offer fresh juices, which could be very thick to drink. They often mix them with some tap water. You might find it in lemonades and fresh mint drinks and of course the ice. People with a very sensitive stomach, get irritated even by the small amout of water contained in an ice cube. By "going too local" I meant those people, who get tempted to try the food and drinks from unverified street vendors. While some customers are in for a delicious treat, for others, it could mean the end of their trip.

Go for bottles

To stay on the safe side, drink bottled water. It's sold at every corner and it's inexpensive, 5 EGP for a small one (0.5 liter), touristy areas maybe double that. Never pay more than this, cause that means they are robbing you :) People at home use special filters, attached to the tap. There are also water dispensers with a weekly water delivery service. If you are afraid while dining out, you can request drinks without an ice and have your tea prepared from the filtered water. You will taste the difference. The tap water has a strong chlorine taste, which doesn't go away even after boiling.

Drinking fountains

The last thing I want to mention, you might see the drinking fountains in front of some buildings. It's basically a big metal box with a tap and a cup. Everybody drinks from that cup, washes it and puts it back on the shelve for the next ones to come. This water is cold, but it is not filtered. Don't refil your bottle there, unless you have lived in Egypt for a while and you are immune enough :)
